Social Worker

  • Earn a Bachelor’s Degree: Start with a bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution. While a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) isn’t mandatory, it can give you advanced standing in a master’s in social work program.

  • Complete a Master’s in Social Work (MSW): MSW programs typically take about two years and include at least 900 hours of fieldwork. If you already have a BSW, you may qualify for advanced standing, which accelerates the timeline by about a year.

  • Gain Supervised Clinical Experience: After earning your MSW, you’ll need post-graduate, supervised clinical experience. Each state has specific requirements, but plan for approximately two years of supervised work.

  • Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam: Prospective LCSWs must pass the Association of Social Work Board (ASWB) clinical examination. This exam costs $260 and consists of 170 multiple-choice questions.

  • Apply for LCSW Licensure: The licensing process varies by state. You can learn about your state board’s application procedures through the ASWB website.
